Leather Buttons Advice For Bushcraft Bag!

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Hope we are all well!

Just thinking about a bushcraft bag and how to make leather buttons to join the pockets and possibly the straps aswell....

Im having difficulty finding a way without buckles or any other sort of man made attachement to close pockets and secure the main flap for the rucksack type bag...

I was thinking of making some leather buttons for all but from anyones experience will these suffice and hold????

Also I was thinking of using stoned oil hide for a distressed/well used look, will I still have to finish this to give it more waterproofing?

Any help advice or otherwise would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Nathan

You can use antler buttons which are strong and will hold up better than leather.

Oiled hide is usually good as is when new and requires treatment with age but it wouldn't hurt to give it a coat of snow seal or similar.

Hi Nathan

Here is a leather button idea I got from a book called Leathercraft by Hand by Jan Faulkner. I used it on my medieval shoes I made last August and wear almost every day. They have held up good so far. I used probably 3 or 4 oz veg tan but I have made them in deerskin and I am sure various chrome tans would work great. I hope I am not breaking copy wright to post the pics from the book. I also put a pic of my shoes. Please excuse the bad 0.6 megapixel shot from my ipod. I hope some other folks post some ideas too as I am interested in this myself.

Cheers, Toolingaroung

Hi toolingaround,

This is anothr great option i can definately see working with the bag. I think I may have no choice but to use some hardware for the straps unless I just simply sew them onto the bag permanently ...

Shoes look good!

The leather buttons that toolingaround pointed you to can work for most of what you initially indicated you're looking to accomplish. Since you mentioned straps in the last post, I'm assuming you mean shoulder straps for wearing?

If so, even without hardware it still can be accomplished; adjustability will take longer, though. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/423/3/BAG-TAIL is a good example of what I mean.

Hey BunyMade

Great idea for the adjustable strap!

BluesMan 1951. Chinese ball buttons! I have made them in cloth never thought of doing them in leather. Good one :-)

Hi Again

In the theme of all leather closures here is another one from a belt pouch I found at a thrift store. It is very secure yet quick to open. I love this little bag and plan to use this closure idea on a tooled bag at some point.

I would love to see how the bag turns out!

As much as I am a D ring and carabeaner maniac I also really love the idea of figuring out how to make things just with the leather or with natural ittems like bone and antler.

Cheers Toolingaround
