Members Wise Owl Studios Posted January 31, 2013 Members Report Posted January 31, 2013 (edited) Hi i recently managed to order a white deer hide as they was on sale and was wondering what sort of simple items would make a decent profit that people are interested in i was going to use part of it to make a test pair of shoes and possible backing for stingray bracelets/wrist cuffs etc but was wondering if other people had better ideas for the rest of the hide other then small money bags (think those middle age money bags made of leather with a string to open/close) unless there popular. I only have a few basic tools such as a beveler and skiver so cant do shirts etc that need sowing machines and for gloves i need a good pattern if there popular Edited February 1, 2013 by Wise Owl Studios Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted February 1, 2013 Moderator Report Posted February 1, 2013 Probably way too stretchy for shoes, but deer makes a nice lining for some things. I made some gloves based on the patterns from TLF several years ago. I made the Buffalo Bill type gauntlet gloves with 6" fringe for myself from deer and elk. I sewed them by hand. They came out well, fit good, and were kind of fun to wear. I was kind of limited where I could wear them. Apparently some people (both wives) thought they were not as fashionably appropriate as I did. Quote
Ambassador Beaverslayer Posted February 1, 2013 Ambassador Report Posted February 1, 2013 Well first off. White Deer hide is going to show dirt real fast and real easy, so I'd nix the inside of a cuff as a use for it. I've use it in the past, made a complete ensemble for a lady with a Hat (baseball style with tooled and painted rim) fancy belt again with tooled and painted roses, as well as a vest/waistcoat and purse/handbag. All the above mentioned items were laced together rather than sewing. Deer hide makes some very nice lace and it will be the same color as the item you make out of the deer hide. You could always make a few ladies purse/handbags and do some stingray inlays, I think they would be profitable. Quote

Members WScott Posted February 3, 2013 Members Report Posted February 3, 2013 I wanted some for lining projects, but after pulling 10 hides, I couldn't find one with any useable sq ftage...holes, scrapes and or really dirty. They all looked like seconds (or thirds) to me Too bad as it has a lovely soft feel and a great smoking white look...when clean which obviously isn't for long. Quote
Members Wise Owl Studios Posted February 3, 2013 Author Members Report Posted February 3, 2013 the hide i got was quite nice a clean with only a small hole where it was shot (i got a hunted one rather then farmed as that was what was on sale) Quote
Members WScott Posted February 3, 2013 Members Report Posted February 3, 2013 The ones I looked at were either filthy or like Swiss cheese. Have you ever noticed that defects are always right in the middle of the largest, useful area!! Quote
LNLeather Posted February 3, 2013 Report Posted February 3, 2013 These bags work for me . Bill Really Nice Bags Bill... I REALLY Like the way you stitch up the bag in the middle! Quote
