Django Report post Posted August 21, 2008 Hi, i have just joined the forum and am slowly finding my way around. I was wondering if you could give me some advise on leather to use for authentic late 1800s chaps and gun rigs. As i do not know the terms used for leather work yet, please bear with me if i ask basic questions!! I have copied a lot of pics' from Ebay items so i know what i would like to make, (just utility items) . I have never done leather work before but have done some tailoring in the past . We do have a Tandy outlet in England ...but compared with the States they want £s for $s almost twice the price!! I have spent some time with a saddler here in England and he has advised me on some basic tools (awls, needles etc)that i have now purchased. Can i purchase just the awl blades somewhere in the US as the one i have is a bit to broad. I am having trouble finding a supplier for waxed linen thread in the UK, 18 3cord etc, is there someone on the forum from England who might help out with this? If not I may have to buy from the US, any suggestions? Thankyou in advance for your time and help. Jump to folder: Inbox Sent Items
rdb Report post Posted August 21, 2008 Welcome to the board! If somewhere here can't point you to what you need, they don't make it. I do know that Bowstock is in the UK: http://www.bowstock.co.uk/acatalog/index.html I'll bet if you ring them up, they would be able to point you to others there too. Of course, what is considered the best Bridle leathers can be found right in England... http://www.je-sedgwick.co.uk/ As far as a good list of suppliers, try this page: http://www.leatherworker.net/suppliers.htm Don't forget to keep us informed on your progress. Django Report post Posted August 21, 2008 Well hi! and thankyou for the warm welcome! I'll check out the suggested links . Please continue the thread if anyone comes up with more advice. Does anyone know what weight and cut of leather would be best for a supple pair of step in shotgun chaps?
celticleather Report post Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) If you're anywhere near London, the biggest stockist of everything you'll ever need is J T Batchelor 9-10 Culford Mews Islington London N1 4DZ Telephone: 020 7254 2962 It's well worth a visit to them, just to see the tremendous range of leathers, buckles, fittings and tools that they have. Speak to Ted or Rocky . . . they're really helpful guys! They don't have much in bridle leathers, but the Sedgwick link is ideal for that type of leather. Another good source of tools etc is Le Prevo at http://www.leprevo.co.uk/index.html who have an excellent online catalogue.
