El Zipster Report post Posted March 24, 2013 What do you guys think is best, clams or a pony? I'm just starting out and am going to build one or the other, I would like your opinions on which type you think is best and and why. Many thanks Cheers Zip
TwinOaks Report post Posted March 24, 2013 whichever suits you best... primarily how you'll be seated, or whichever position you prefer, and the height you want to work. The jaws will function much the same way, and you will just need to decide on a saddler's vs. harness maker's design. The saddler's design has deeper jaws, allowing larger pieces. El Zipster Report post Posted March 24, 2013 Thanks for the reply, just another question as i've never seen one of these in the flesh before LOL How wide do the jaws generally open? Cheers Zip
TwinOaks Report post Posted March 24, 2013 Depending on a couple of things, I think most can be opened to about an inch.
King's X Report post Posted March 26, 2013 Unless you build one for you needs. I have built a couple of 'couch' stitching ponies. I am attaching a couple of photographs for you. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/160/373211629_47c45ae8cb.jpg My favorite and still in use.... http://blog.artifactbags.com/wp-content/gallery/stitching-horse-vs-stitching-clam/antique-stitching-clam.jpg and of course, to help you understand how they are made.....minus the language barrier....here is a short video http://www.fineleatherworking.com/blog/making-a-sewing-clam/ Hope this helps.
