Guitar Strap Hole Size

Recommended Posts

Depends on the make of guitar. For example.......Telecasters use an 8mm hole or 5/16" most others are smaller

Well.....If you are making standard Holes/slots 5/16 is pretty standard...don't forget the anti rip hole up top of the slot.

Gretsch guitars use a screw in style button that is 5mm. so do not make a slot in these straps only a single hole.

For guitars using strap locks you need a 10mm-13/32 hole NO SLOT. GET METRIC PUNCHES:)

so there are basically 3 styles of standard strap holes.

Go to your local music shop and buy Schaller Strap Locks and a set of original replacement strap buttons. That way you have a way to test them since it seems you don't own a guitar to test these straps on.

I'm gonna have to get me some of those Gretsch buttons so I can see them for myself (Or, I can buy a Gretsch and call it an expense :)). I have a customer right now who told me his Fender strap locks are 12mm - that seems huge to me. I'm going to have to order some to make sure. I've actually found that both my Schaller and Dunlop strap locks take the exact same size hole as most of my guitars strap buttons. They all fit over it and they're tight enough that they aren't slipping off.

Hi Guys

Great info in this thread.

I'm looking for the correct hole size for a Switchcraft 1/4 inch jack/end button combo, anybody help?

Cheers

I use 3/8" on the 1/4" Jack/End Buttons, it works on the ones I've done which both were Martins with Fishman under the saddle pickups installed.

Hope that helps,

Chief
