How Do I Paint On A Store Bought Breastcollar?

Hello everyone.. I'm new to leatherwork and this is my first post although I've been lurking and learning for close to a month now.. I love how helpful this community is.

Anyways, my daughter made rodeo princess for our 4th of July rodeo and I want to paint Stars and Stripes on a store bought breastcollar to match her shirt. Ideally I'd love to make one from scratch but I'm a ways off from that yet. Lol

I'll be using the cova paints from Tandy, but what about the finish that's already on the collar? Do I have to strip it with something, paint it, then reseal it or can I just paint right onto it (after I've cleaned it of course) and then seal it again?
