Members Leatherman87 Posted June 29, 2013 Members Report Posted June 29, 2013 Looking for a stiff double shoulder or side of veg tan for my gun belts. Ive used 6-7 oz bullhide from zackwhite but i don't like that its hit and miss on quality. Ive also tried W&C Oak which is a soft hand even after holstering from the tannery. How is herman oak leather? Is it stiff? Quote
Members Rayban Posted July 7, 2013 Members Report Posted July 7, 2013 Please let us know how you do find "bullhide"...some say it's a myth. I've asked a promanant belt maker where he gets his bullhide from and he wouldn't tell me...I suspect it's stiff stuff that comes from South America which I have had a lot of trouble with their poor tanning process. Members Leatherman87 Posted July 7, 2013 Author Members Report Posted July 7, 2013 Yes i believe its all a sales pitch. But when i say bullhide i mean zackwhites bullhide shoulders. Ive used them and the quality is hit and miss. So now I'm looking for something that has a stiff hand but quality is consistent. I tried W&C Oak and its beautiful leather but the only problem its limp as a soggy noodle. I heard hermann oak has a more firm hand. This will be a liner for my gun belts. top is W&C bridle. Quote

Members Leatherman87 Posted July 7, 2013 Author Members Report Posted July 7, 2013 I believe this is a soft leather for like moccasin and such wouldn't work well on a Ccw carry belt. Belt bends vs sides? Spring feild leather offers both. What's the diffence other then one is a bend and other is a side.. Quote
Members PappyUSA Posted July 7, 2013 Members Report Posted July 7, 2013 You'll be able to cut longer straps from sides than single bends. Quote
Members Leatherman87 Posted July 7, 2013 Author Members Report Posted July 7, 2013 Leaning towards HO sides anyone know where to get first quality with no minimum Quote
robertmeco Posted July 8, 2013 Report Posted July 8, 2013 Robert, do you use their leather? I see it's imported too. No sir it was just a linc i found for bull hide I use only herman oak leather Quote
Members Cyberthrasher Posted July 8, 2013 Members Report Posted July 8, 2013 Springfield's B grade HO is pretty good. The only lacking quality I've ever had was some poorly placed marks in the center that are hard for me to work around when making 50" x 3" guitar straps. Even the belly on most of the stuff I've purchased has been pretty firm, so I can use it in a pinch if I'm desperate. Goliger Leather carries A grade HO though and they're pretty decently priced. I want to say it's roughly $8.25 sq/ft. Quote
