Dyeing Leather- Shiny Spots?

Recommended Posts

Howdy all. I am in the process of re-dyeing a leather holster, from brown to black. I used alot of denatured alcohol and elbow grease to remove the original finish. Let it dry and applied a coat of Fiebings Pro oil dye (Black). Let it dry and buffed well.

Applied a second coat, let it dry, and buffed. Noticed shiny splotches/areas on the holster. Buffing doesn't change it much. Any ideas what the problem is here? Should I just keep applying coats until the entire holster is shiny like this, or?

TIA, Ray

If it is black already, more dye will just make your clothes black when you wear it.

If you want it shiny, I would use shoe polish on it and buff it.

Of course I inrend to buff off any extra oil and seal it when done dyeing. Not sure you get my question.

I did understand it. Most people just do not understand that adding more black dye will not make your item blacker, just will make your clothes black.

I have no other answer on the spots. Re-dying an item is always risky.

More dye will NOT "Make my clothes black" if the extra residue is buffed off and a good sealer applied.

I'll use Resolene for a sealer then Renaisance wax over that.
