Hey all,

What's is the best leather for dog collars besides latigo. Currently I have 8/9oz from Tandy. It's thick however I made a belt about 2 weeks ago and it's warped already. On the belt I didn't stitch it so I'm not sure if that made it easy to stretch out of shape or not. The belt has my leery of making collars knowing that a dog that pulls will possibly prematurely stretch the collar out of shape

Hi! Welcome. Best thing to do is practice. I made a collar best I could, then used it on my 35 ..at the time.. KG Doberman. After 10 months it was heavily worn and I could see where the weaknesses were and what needed improving.

the result was a 5mm leather stitched onto a 3mm leather and I ensured the stitching was hidden, within a groove so him scratching would not effect it. 2 years on the collar is not showing any signs of wear and he is now 45KG, scratches it daily, gets it wet and pulls a lot.

Yes the stitching all the way around prevents the leather from stretching for sure. Very labour intensive if you want to hand stitch it all the way round, I also did it on a curve, so the inner piece of leather is shorter than the outer, thus less stress on the stitches when its around my dogs neck.

I used the 1" wide "belt" leather from Tandy. I admit our dog was only a 45 pound Irish Setter, but he broke every store bought belt I tried for several years. When I finally made this one it lasted at least ten years (until he passed away). It is still in excellent condition, just well broken in.
