Softening Leather.

Recommended Posts

I have to make two 18" leather slings for two little girls rifles- Chipmunk 22cals. All the leather i have is heavy and stiff veg tanned 9/10 oz. i dont have any way to thin it down and no time to order more. I think i can get by with the thickness if i can get it softened up. Is this possible and how. thanks..... Undie.

Hey hillbilly. Probably one thing is to apply neatsfoot oil. Don't know what you have available or able to run down to the store and get. The oil can be picked up from Walmart. After oiling let the strips bask in the sun for a while. No sun?. Flood lamps then. A couple of coats wouldn't hurt. No plain water expecially hot. Flexing the strips after oiling will assist the leather in soaking up the oil.

Where im WV?

You can also soften most veggie tan leather also by taking a 1/2 to 3/4 inch rod and rolling it on the floor. Roll it around the rod, . . . making it do a 180 as you go from end to end.

Do both sides a couple of times, . . . it softens up nicely. I do all my belts that way, . . . kinda breaks them in quickly.

May God bless,

Dwight
