Coaster Questions?

Recommended Posts

I'm wanting to make some coaster sets for my family. I've done some searches here, but can find no definite answers to my questions. So I was hoping someone could help me.

I want to tool them, but what thickness should I use?

Also, will the tooling leather need a backing leather? Like suede? Or could I buy adhesive backed sheet cork?

What type finish should I use to make them more waterproof?

Thanks in advance!

Bobby

My coasters are 7-8 oz. with a stitched suede back, you can go a little thicker when carving.

I use super sheen, mink oil and sno-seal to finish.

I'm new to leather work in general and I'm just curious what order your applying those finishes in?

Dye,sheen,mink oil,sno-seal.

Sometimes I'll use tan cote between the dye and the sheen.

The suede is glued to the back, trimmed and then stitched.

The final step is to burnish the edge.
