Ring Work?

Recommended Posts

I'very been reading David Morgan's "Braiding Fine Leather" and was wondering if anyone could please explain to me what he means by "ring work"? He mentions it very briefly and with no explanation (that I can understand, anyway) of how to do it.

After reading the same section on round braiding several more times, I think I understand 4-seam, etc...but I still do not know what he means by "ring work".

I tried searching on here and elsewhere before posting this question and couldn't find anything about it...hopefully, someone here will be able to explain it.

Ringwork is another name for fancy plaiting. A pattern that goes around the braid. Often multiple rings of varying patterns strung together. Commonly found on whip handles or anything else that doesnt do a lot of flexing. Because of the possibility for several overs without an under to lock the strand, most ringwork is kept short with other ring patterns used to lock long runs of over.

Thanks for your reply...do you know of any tutorials that I could check out to learn how to do that?

There are 2 methods. One is laying down the bottom layer then weaving the top layer into it. do some fid work to line everything up and pull your strands tight before tying off. The other is actually plaiting the pattern. Check some of Bernie46 vids on youtube. He has vids on making the pattern on paper. I am so new to it I use the weave method so I can stop and take a break without it all coming apart.

Peter T recently posted a nice whip that he plaited and explained the process. He also gave me some very good advice on some ringwork I posted using the other method.

There are seven pages of videos by Bernie46...any hints on which ones would cover ring work? I also don't know which post of Peter T's you're talking about and he has more than a few...

I don't know what this means.
