roughout Report post Posted February 7, 2014 I have been focusing on building rough out Wade saddles. Once the leather has been cased, worked, and the saddle is complete, the leather looks a little shaggy. I've tried a wire brush and hand sanding with different grits and it doesn't help. When I look at nice rough outs, say a Tips, they don't have that shaggy appearance. I've looked for a thread dealing with this and the only advice I could find was one member saying they get buffed hides. I don't remember seeing that as an option (I've been using Hidehouse lately). Any input as to how to get a crisp rough out would be appreciated. Thanks.
Shelly Report post Posted February 7, 2014 Hermann Oak has buffed hides. I think you can get them buffed from Wickett and Craig also. Costs a bit more. You can use an orbital belt sander on the parts you need to take the fuzz off as well. Just do what needs done, what is seen. I'm not sure what grit to rec as I only buy buffed hides for rough out saddles...
joe59 Report post Posted February 10, 2014 I have worked with a few "old time" saddle makers who showed me how quality roughout saddles were made back in the day. Done properly, it can be as much as more work than stamping a grain out saddle. Basically, you "burnish" the entire saddle the same way you burnish the edges. Bob Klenda wrote an excellent article for the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal. I can't remember which issue but it was a few years ago. Bob has a web site with contact information and is a great source of information.
