Members Stitch Dex Holsters Posted April 15, 2014 Members Report Posted April 15, 2014 I have recently started trying my hand at all leather lined holsters. As you can see form the pictures, I am not getting the definition I would like to get when I do the forming. I am using 7-9 ounce leather and was thinking since I was lining it that it would help to go a bit thinner on the outer leather. Does this sound right or do I just need more practice. Ok..Ok I know I need more practice especially after seeing the ones BHPshooter put in the gallery the other day….WOW very nice work! This one does not have a liner but still is heavy leather Quote
Members supercub Posted April 15, 2014 Members Report Posted April 15, 2014 There is absolutely nothing wrong with the detail molding on these holsters. Only thing I'd change is to move the stitchline slightly closer to the gun. Lining with suede? The advantage of lining might be lost if the suede is not veg tan (chromic acid tan on some suede) and the suede is sometimes coarser than the flesh side of a good quality side. The suede might also attract and hold oil and dust which becomes abrasive. Smooth grain side leather probably makes the best lining. Making the top leather thinner would give more detail, but thats not necessarily better. Lighter leather will usually not stand up to the abuse that a heavier holster will. A double layer of 4/5 or 3/4 glued together will give a good sturdy holster and a smooth inner lining. Quote
Members Stitch Dex Holsters Posted April 15, 2014 Author Members Report Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) i just realized it says suede on the picture. Sorry its not suede, it's veg tanned pigskin. I like the idea of double layers of 3/4 4/5. The pigskin seems to hold the gun in the holster and then let loose all at once if that makes any sence. sticky is the best way I would describe it. I will pick up some thinner leather and give that a try. Edited April 15, 2014 by Stitch Dex Holsters Quote
