Members Daggrim Posted October 12, 2008 Members Report Posted October 12, 2008 I need to restock my polished cattle horns. I put them on leather Viking helmets, so I need them in sets. I've purchased in the past from Boone Trading, and been pleased, but the prices have risen up to $15 for one small horn. Crazy Crow won't make sets. So, any sources out there for horns 6-8" long? Thanks, Doug Leatherhelms Quote

Members hivemind Posted October 13, 2008 Members Report Posted October 13, 2008 I've recently bought some caribou furs from them. Great stuff, fast shipping, I couldn't be happier. Quote
Members RuehlLeatherWorks Posted October 13, 2008 Members Report Posted October 13, 2008 They're great when you call as well. They're willing to match things for you and get something in the shape/description you need or at least close to it. I had them send me a matched pair of turtle shells for dual rattles at one point. Members DCKNIVES Posted November 10, 2008 Members Report Posted November 10, 2008 Are natural horns ever used versus the polished ones? Dave Quote
Members oldtimer Posted November 10, 2008 Members Report Posted November 10, 2008 I think it was the Minnesota variety that used horns...... William I guess you´re right! Scandinavian vikings never used horns on their helmets ! Myth busted ! Quote
Members Daggrim Posted November 10, 2008 Author Members Report Posted November 10, 2008 Are natural horns ever used versus the polished ones? Dave For what I do, no. The natural ones are pretty rough, and I think people like the shiny new look if they're going to spend a couple hundred bucks. Altho, I do plan to build a couple helmets from my scrappier looking leather pieces, and not polish them, so they have that nice battle worn mercenary look. Daggrim Quote
Members smugglerjim Posted January 15, 2011 Members Report Posted January 15, 2011 There is a place on ebay that sells out of St Augustine Florida, they have all kinds of horns and good prices. I don't know if they pair them. I need to restock my polished cattle horns. I put them on leather Viking helmets, so I need them in sets. Members BIGGUNDOCTOR Posted January 15, 2011 Members Report Posted January 15, 2011 Anyone know how the myth of Viking helmets with horns got started? IIRC their ancestors used either horns, or antlers, but I may be mistaken. Funny how certain myths get perpetuated over the years. Quote
Members Gawdzilla Posted January 16, 2011 Members Report Posted January 16, 2011 I've put horns on Tandy's "Aristocrat" Top Hat. The hat made it into Iron Horse magazine. Quote
Members oldtimer Posted January 25, 2011 Members Report Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) Anyone know how the myth of Viking helmets with horns got started? IIRC their ancestors used either horns, or antlers, but I may be mistaken. Funny how certain myths get perpetuated over the years. It started in Germany, during the twenties and thirties, when the theories of the Ayrian race began to develop, and glamorous pics af the Ayrian people were produced. I guess Hollywood has a part of it too, not to mention reenactors and Swedish Ice Hockey fans wearing blue/ Yellow horned helmets watching the Ice hockey World Championships, ( when Sweden whippes the US team in the final.) hehehehe There is only one helmet found in Scandinavia ( Norway), and it did not have horns. http://www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/armsandarmour/mailshrt.html I found a Swedish document on the web about the myth of Viking horned helmets. It is named " A study of the non- existent" But ......There are exceptions: American Vikings still have horns on their helmets - and they are existant ! /Knut Edited January 25, 2011 by oldtimer Quote
Members RuehlLeatherWorks Posted January 29, 2011 Members Report Posted January 29, 2011 The classical composer Wagner had a hand in the horned helmet mythology as well. Now the Celts....THEY had horned helms to some degree! Quote
