musicafterhours Report post Posted May 14, 2014 (edited) I want to make some trim pieces for my MC and made my 1st attempt at the design I want. Aside from the need for lots more practice, I'd like to know if there are any tools or changes to the design that would help me make it passible. (That's 1st attempt at leather work period as if it weren't obvious) Doesn't look like the attachment worked so here's the dropbox link https://www.dropbox.com/s/9vj49qby38vp0ii/vWings_first_try.jpg Thanks, Dave Edited May 14, 2014 by musicafterhours
musicafterhours Report post Posted May 15, 2014 Maybe asking the wrong question. Are there any videos out there showing how to carve wings like on the Harley logo? Thx
CTaylorJr Report post Posted May 16, 2014 It looks like the swivel knife blade needs to be stropped. Also, try and end your cuts at the feather tips and not begin at them or swivel through them. What size blade are you using on your swivel knife? If the piece is as small as it looks (based on the stretch clamp mark) I would recommend a small angled blade. Keep practicing and you'll be doing the wings in no time.
silverwingit Report post Posted May 20, 2014 How thick is that leather? It looks pretty thin to get nice, deep, well-burnished imprints. 5-6 ounce would be the minimum, IMO. Also, proper casing is key to successful tooling. You might want to review Hidepounder's tutorial in the "How do I do that" section.
