Kevin King Report post Posted October 18, 2008 (edited) Well, here I go Johanna. Due to the fact that I am not a huge fan of recieving hand outs and all you crazy people seem to have this facsination (almost an obsession) with helping each other out, i would like to announce an event that will hopefully help leatherworker.net, myself, expenses for my dad, and one lucky winner. Whats the prize you ask? This is where it gets fun. I have been asked many times how I do this, or how'd I do that. Some elements of what I do I have shared and other parts I have withheld as my personal trade secret. Now i would like to offer up everything I know about making one of my wallets. Everything. This will be a raffle style event. The prize being a completly one-off custom piece to the winner. Also included will be a step by step detailed tutorial of the making of your wallet. Everything from what kind of leather I use for each part of the piece, dimensions, design transfer, suppliers, thread size, needle size etc. Everything. I will also offer up my personal cell number (once I get it turned back on) so you can call with questions. Now, how's this gonna work? The cost to enter is $20. $10 will go to Kevin King Leather and $10 will go Leatherworker.net. You can enter as many times as you wish with as much as you wish. For example: If you send $40 you will be entered twice, If you send $100 you will be entered 5 times and those of you that were generous enough to help out previously will automatically be entered. This event starts now and the deadline for entries is November 18th with the winner to be announced on November 20th, 9pm CST. So...Who's interested? You can send your paypal entries to my new e-mail address at: kkingleather(at)gmail(dot)com Edited October 18, 2008 by TwinOaks email edit

Russ Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I've been saving my money for a KK wallet so I could tear it apart and try to figure out some of his secrets. Now the question is.....am I feeling lucky? I love donating to a good cause, and this is a good cause x 2.
Johanna Report post Posted October 18, 2008 I'm touched, Kevin. You've got so much going on right now, but you still thought about LW. I don't think everyone realizes that LW has bills too. I know you will get things squared away soon- you are a "can-do" kinda guy. I closed the shop 10 years ago, I never sewed on a machine much, and even I want to know the "secrets" to the look you get, even though I will never use the knowledge. My curiosity was piqued a long time ago because you do such fine work. Hope you get set up soon, and hugs to you and your son! Thank you for thinking about LW. We've been lucky to make some great friendships here, haven't we? Johanna

ttownfire Report post Posted October 29, 2008 Up to 12 entries. Nobody else interested? Feedback? Suggestions?KK Here is a suggestion; Make a wallet tutorial and sell it for $20 a shot. I would pay for that in a heart beat. Hell, I'll buy it and then code it and/or make it a webpage or PDF for free if you want. The darn economy is in the porcelain and I reckon people are saving every Jackson they can find...
Russ Report post Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) Here is a suggestion; Make a wallet tutorial and sell it for $20 a shot. I've already put in an entry, but I'd add money for that in a NY minute....that's what I'm trying to win. Not sure if KK would want to sell his secrets that cheap though. Kevin King Report post Posted October 30, 2008 (edited) 14 entries! Keep in mind, this also includes those of you who helped me out earlier in the year. Thank You! Here is a suggestion; Make a wallet tutorial and sell it for $20 a shot. I would pay for that in a heart beat. Hell, I'll buy it and then code it and/or make it a webpage or PDF for free if you want. The darn economy is in the porcelain and I reckon people are saving every Jackson they can find... Ya, I have kicked that idea around and even had a few others suggest doing the tutorial download thing and I may do something like that in the future. What I am going for with this event is to try and pay a little bit of generosity forward to LW. Like you said, with the economy being the way it is, one would think that a free website such as LW that is in no way free to operate is also feeling the crunch. One other way I am thinking about this is kind of like an apprentiship of sorts. While I am not ready to share everything with everyone, I am willing to share what I do know with one individual who will, by the end of the tut, be able to create an absolutly flawless piece of leather art and be able to reatain that knowledge and use it over again. The "prize" here is everything I know, from my design transfer process which is a process I use that requires no marking on the leather what-so-ever and will allow you to transfer almost anything you want to a inlay/overlay design that can not only be used on wallets but many many other aplications all the way down to needle size. I have provided a link on the home page of my website that should make it a little easier to enter. All you do is select how many entries you would like to purchase and click the button. You can get to my website by clicking here or by clicking the link at the bottom of the post. KK Edited October 30, 2008 by Kevin King

What I am going for with this event is to try and pay a little bit of generosity forward to LW. Like you said, with the economy being the way it is, one would think that a free website such as LW that is in no way free to operate is also feeling the crunch. I like the idea of donating and I think its great that you want to pay it forward. All I'm saying is that you could pay it forward and cover a TON of your expenses by creating a download-able tutorial. I think you could easily quadruple the number, in a matter of days, of people willing give you money for something like this. I never win contests like this and I have never won the lottery Therefore, I tend to shy away from raffles and other "lottery-esqe" events. I will donate to Leather worker but I have a hard time doing raffles like this, I guess its just a personality flaw. My wife is going to handle that stuff for the boy and his sports stuff. The "prize" here is everything I know, from my design transfer process which is a process I use that requires no marking on the leather what-so-ever and will allow you to transfer almost anything you want to a inlay/overlay design that can not only be used on wallets but many many other aplications all the way down to needle size. Like I said, this is good stuff that people will pay for, right now. Think about the leather workers that make videos and sell patterns. From my vantage point, selling you techniques isn't any different. I have a lot more, but I don't want to hijack this thread with business mumbo-jumbo.
