quirtevans Report post Posted June 13, 2014 I've had the thought, to build my own makers mark. I find the oval "maker" style rather boring and quite frankly a bit over priced. I thought I'd try my own using a dremel and a wood burning set to make a shallow mold and piur one using some old linotype I have. Has anyone ever made your own? What worked? What didn't? chrstn53 Report post Posted June 13, 2014 (edited) I have never dived into making my own stamp, but there is a guy from the Czech Republic that makes custom stamps. I have had several makers mark stamps and other custom stamps made and the turnaround if pretty fast. Normally my order arrives in about 10 business days. For my large "brand" stamp I got some pretty high quotes here in the united states, so I sent my artwork to this maker and the price was less than what some of the guys here want to charge for a derlin plastic stamp. I think it was around $60 to my door and I have made at least 500 impressions with the stamp and it looks just like it did the day it arrived. The website is http://www.toolpaw.com Just an option Edited June 13, 2014 by northmount Fixed url

Being in Alaska I like the bear paw.. that and a bit of text... But.. I still might play with making one.. Just to say I did! That way I can get frustrated and order one from them later! Greg528it Report post Posted June 20, 2014 I've made several stamps, including my signature as the mark. I combined my sandblasting techniques and blasted them into glass tiles, that were bonded to wood dowels. As long as i dont drop them, they will last forever. Using wood working carving skills, dremel, point chisels one should be able to make your own by hand. If working with wood, used something hard like oak or maple or other. Since the cased leather wont be overly damp, moisture transfer back to the wood should minimal. I expect the mark would be used once then not again for quite awhile. Other materials should work as well. Someone just made a mall using a cutting board. That material should work. and one last point, dont put the word MAKER in your mark. That would have been like Picaso also signing Painter. :-)
bethefawn Report post Posted July 30, 2014 Just got my brand/hot stamp from shapeways.com today, I think it cost me more than the six bucks the tutorial mentions (primarily because I needed it a little big to capture the detail), but I'm pretty happy with it! It may not be a proper maker's mark, and I'm worried it's a little big for wallets, but it works pretty well (I've used it subsequently on other pieces to the one pictured, and it looks a lot nicer). Of course, now I want an arbor press instead of mashing it down with my 25 lb dumbbell!

Nuttish Report post Posted August 4, 2014 I've had the thought, to build my own makers mark. I find the oval "maker" style rather boring and quite frankly a bit over priced. I thought I'd try my own using a dremel and a wood burning set to make a shallow mold and piur one using some old linotype I have. Has anyone ever made your own? What worked? What didn't? However, I question whether you're going to like the quality you get with those tools making a mold for moveable type hot metal. Custom moveable type is either photoengraved or very very very very rarely punchcut, which is what you're essentially proposing. For allllllll the time and trouble you're going to go through, I'd honestly suggest just using Illustrator or Inkscape and drawing your mark to send it to Owasso and have some deep cut embossing dies made. Their plates come large enough that you can get so much on them that they're ridiculously cost effect — sometimes less expensive than a single Grey Ghost Delrin mark, for example. How much is your time worth?
