Oiling A Suede Backed Gun Belt?

Some folks want a gun or shell belt for cowboy action shooting, backed with suede or chap split so it doesn't slide around on the body as easily.

Any of you that's built them like that, how do you give the finished belt a good oiling and not get oil on the lining.

I come from the school of using a swatch of shearling and a bowl with oil in it and applying liberally to a new project. Maybe I have to change my ways?

I have never built a rig like that, however, I would suggest building up several light coats of oil. Wring most of the oil out of the shearling first to prevent excess oil from running over the edges and getting on the suede. A sponge or paint brush may help in this case. I always use a dauber or foam paint brush to apply oil.

These type of belts I oil before adding the lining, making sure that there is a long dry time before lining.
