DavidL Report post Posted July 28, 2014 I have a few questions Id like to get some opinions on. 1. Treadles. Can they be added to a non functioning electric singer (faulty wiring) and are all treadles compatible? 2. on the 45k and 111w can an edge guide be added? 3. Which of the 2 models work best as an overall machine also which will have the least problems?
Constabulary Report post Posted July 28, 2014 1. Treadles. Can they be added to a non functioning electric singer (faulty wiring) and are all treadles compatible? Generally yes - you can treadle almost every sewing machine but it depends on the machine and treadle combination. I think you will have a hard time to treadle a 45K with a treadle of Singer 201 domestic machine. Heavy machines need a heavy treadle. 2. on the 45k and 111w can an edge guide be added? On flat beds yes on cylinder beds it depends on if the arm has an attachment plate or not. But on 111w cylinder beds you alternatively can add a flip down edge guide. 3. Which of the 2 models work best as an overall machine also which will have the least problems? Depends on how thick you want to sew - if not more than 3/8 I´d say the 111w is better if it has a walking foot system. And for the 111w you find a wide range or accessories whereas accessories for the 45K are harder to find. Both do not have problems if they are well serviced and adjusted and you don´t overcharge them.

DavidL Report post Posted July 28, 2014 If I choose to add a servo motor with a speed reducer can it be added to a 45k or 111 easily with simple tools? http://www.leathermachineco.com/products/motorsreducers/
Constabulary Report post Posted July 28, 2014 A servo motor + speed reducer is for sure the better idea - much more torque than just a treadle!!! Sure, you just need some bolts and tools + 1 or 2 new V-belts. Depends on where you install the reducer + motor.
Darren Brosowski Report post Posted July 29, 2014 I prefer treadles to servos as the speed change is almost instant. The 45k was built as a treadle but the fame, footplate and band wheel were about 5 times the weight of even a standard industrial treadle. 45k edge guide is not a problem. There is one for the GA5 and another for the 441 but with either I think the holes need to be redrilled. and getting screws could be an issue although you could drill and retap. The 45k89 is a walking foot but there is a roller foot available for the 45k21 and 45k25. I know this for a fact as I have them in stock on ebay Australia. In the not too distant future I will have new standard feet available as well as needle plates. ATM I have about 40 new-old-stock feed dogs. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Leather-Roller-Foot-For-Singer-45k-45k25-45k21-GA5-GA5-1-Cowbow-CB2500-/221448164280?pt=AU_Sewing&hash=item338f56d3b8 A flatbed attachment is easy to make.
