Consew 206Rb - Is This A Hook Problem?

I was sewing along quite nicely when suddenly there was a crunching sound from below the feed dogs. When I got the fabric detached from the machine I found tangled stitching and several cut ends of thread sticking out of the bobbin. The needle did not break, but I replaced it anyway.

Now the needle and top thread do not pick up the bobbin thread.

Did something happen to the hook?

Yes, you popped the safety clutch. Clear out all of the jamming thread and cloth. Hold down the button in the body, closest to the bobbin case cover. Rotate the handwheel backwards until you hear a click, at which time the mechanism should have re-engaged. Test the timing and continue sewing, holding the starting threads back for a few stitches.

If your machine doesn't have the safety clutch, disregard this tip. Either the needle bar has been knocked out of time, or the hook has been dragged into a retarded position. Either will require retiming the machine.

I can't think of a button like you describe. This is a Consew 206RB-3. Is it too old to have such a button? Or am I just looking in the wrong place?

The button would be visible in the bed of the machine, somewhere to the right of the bobbin cover plate. Do you have any pushable buttons on the bed of the machine?

If not, the hook has no automatic protection and it has been knocked out of time.

The specs for the Consew 206RB-3 show that it does indeed feature a safety clutch to protect the hook. That clutch has a push button on the flat bed, which is used in conjunction with reverse wheeling the handwheel to reengage a popped clutch.

The machine is now back home from Ralph's sewing machine hospital in Denver. It was indeed a timing problem.

So my 206 RB 3 will not spin the hook at all! I've tried pushing clutch engagement button and spinning flywheel backwards but nothing happens. The assembly turns freely, the feed dog and needle seem to move correctly but the bobbin and hook don't move at all. I'm guessing a gear issue at the backside of the machine at the safety clutch housing. I REALLY need my long arm to run. Can anybody clue me in as to what to do next? I thought I've tried pretty much everything but removal of the safety clutch at the bottom of the machine. This Consew has seen some abuse by the previous upholsterer and has had timing and tension issues intermittently since I started working on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA
