Vegetable Tanned Calfskin "kip" From Waterhouse

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I was wondering if anyone works with this leather? I just received a side from Waterhouse and while pretty good, is much whiter than other natural veg tanned sides I've worked with. Just curious if anyone has worked with it and how you like it. Since it's 100% veg tanned, I'd imagine it should burnish just as well as the others but how does the color change with time/sun?

Thanks

I have a lot of experience with this leather. It's solid, but you have to keep an eye on the quality. I actually just made a post inquiring about the kip from springfield to see if maybe it was a little more consistant. The kip from waterhouse is definitely pretty white, It darkens with time and use for sure...but I have never layed them out in the sun as some do.

Edit: just to add, this has been my "go to" leather for almost a year and I've worked through dozens of sides

I have a side of calfskin from Springfield. Ive only gotten one side so I cant speak to the consistency, but it is very white and I have left it in the sun for a few hours and didnt notice any color change, but I didnt look for it either. I have noticed that when oiled or dyed, it develops spots that werent noticable before, like scarring, but very small and all over the leather. Also, with just neatsfoot oil, it turns an ugly grayish brown and gets a waxy feel that doesnt go away. The only dye ive used is vinegaroon, which seems to color it consistantly ( except for the scarring).

Thanks. I just received samples from Hide House in Napa CA and they have Veg Tan Kip and Veg Tan Calf. The calf looking like what I got from Waterhouse and a sort of tan/grey color. The Veg Tan Kip, however, looks like more "normal" veg tanned leather.

I always though kip = calf? Confused. Oh well.

I've bought 4 of these hides from them and they skive it to .75mm for me for free. Makes great wallets and while 2 had areas with a lot of imperfections, I was able to cover them with wallet pockets. I usually airbrush these hides because they're so thin and the dye just soaks right in.

This is all .75mm hide from them.
