25b Report post Posted March 31, 2015 I've been asked to make a replica of a German WWII map / document case. I have an original one I can use to go by for a pattern (no, I will not be taking it apart)...the original leather has a pebble texture to it. Can anyone recommend the best leather to use for this? It is difficult to tell if the original is veg tanned or chrome tanned. It is quite flexible and much of the finish has rubbed off the outside of the case. I'd say the original is around 6-6.5oz thickness. Any ideas on where to source similar leather? Does anyone know if these were made of cow or horse leather? Thanks for any insight on this case. camano ridge Report post Posted March 31, 2015 Can you show us a picture. I recently needed some pebble grained leather for one of my orders. I sent a picture of what I needed to Kevin at Springfield and they were able to come up with exactly what I needed.
25b Report post Posted March 31, 2015 Yeah, I don't buy from springfield. Any other sources are welcomed. I saw a few that looked close at Maverick Leather. I guess my main question is if anyone knows whether it is 1) veg tanned leather and 2) whether it is cow or horse. Thanks Here's what it looks like. I don't have the case with me where I am right now, but this is the same case. http://www.stewartsmilitaryantiques.com/img/ProdPhoto96915.jpg
stelmackr Report post Posted March 31, 2015 (edited) Boy, that sure looks like some chrome tanned embossed leather I have had that I call "football" leather. see: https://www.google.com/search?q=football+leather&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=e9gaVc_dIYHcoATFvIDABg&ved=0CCsQsAQ&biw=1711&bih=858 Bob Stelmack Edited March 31, 2015 by stelmackr
25b Report post Posted April 1, 2015 It does look similar to that...any suggestions where I might be able to buy football leather? I know Horween makes some...don't know where I could buy it in less than multiple sides though...
stelmackr Report post Posted April 1, 2015 No suggestions, just call around and ask. I would do that, but I don't need the leather ;-) Bob Stelmack
25b Report post Posted April 1, 2015 Ok well that's a lot of help. Thanks a lot. Does anyone else have any actual HELPFUL information on where to buy similar leather please??
stelmackr Report post Posted April 2, 2015 Sorry about the joke. I have a request to Horween to ask for price quotes. I can use some for make products. Let me know what size you will need and I'll let you know the price when I know. Bob Stelmack
25b Report post Posted April 2, 2015 Well, I would appreciate that very much...thank you. I am sure I could make it from a double shoulder. Might could get away with one shoulder, but I think I'd be pushing it. Thanks again..

BIGGUNDOCTOR Report post Posted April 3, 2015 Check with IMA -International Military Antiques. The sell military surplus items, and also sell reproductions. They offer a lot of German items, and the Germans used that pebble grain leather on damned near everything. Black is WWII, brown was WWI.

Well that is interesting...the case I have to work from is marked "1939", but it's brown... Not sure if they'd tell me where they get their leather though if they make and sell reproduction items also though...
