bimbo Report post Posted May 12, 2015 Is anyone using any of the Australian made/produced veg tan leather. I am just starting out and have made a few things like knife sheaths, moulded ammo pouches and going to do a few notebook/diary covers and would like to try out some of the 'home grown' leathers. From what I can tell there is Packers and Greenhalgh tanners that still do veg tans - anyone using either of these leathers? Cheers James
RavenAus Report post Posted May 12, 2015 Packers mainly just do roo. I've not heard of the other. My local supplier can't get veg cowhide from within Australia any more, it's mostly from South America and South Africa. Even the NZ tanneries have closed
bimbo Report post Posted May 12, 2015 (edited) Here is a link to the Greenhalgh website http://www.thetannery.com.au/ for veg tan 'carving/embossing leather' in various thickness go for $215 a side and $150 for 2nd grade which as long as the leather is reasonable quality seems good value. I just want to look at the local options first before I buy imported leather but can't seem to find much infor on perople wih first hand experience using it Edited May 12, 2015 by bimbo
RavenAus Report post Posted May 12, 2015 My supplier is within easy driving distance, about 30 minutes out. I use them because they always stock top quality at the best price in Brisbane. If you do want to try good imported leather, try calling Tracy at East Coast Leather - http://www.eastcoastleather.com.au/
JasonGwiazda Report post Posted December 19, 2016 From what I've seen Greenhalgh isn't too bad but I prefer HO or Lefflers MO for tooling. I've tried getting samples from East Coast Leather and haven't got any of my 4 requests over 3 months. Thinking they only want to deal with QLD folks and not in SA?
