Members tgardner Posted November 29, 2008 Members Report Posted November 29, 2008 I made a dog collar for my dog. I used tan cote as a resist then used fieblings sheridan antigue paste, then dyed the letters with fieblings usmc black and then used tan cote as a top coat. The antique paste is wearing off and so is the black dye. What did I do wrong? Can I salvage this piece? Thank yall for the help. Quote
Members joet Posted November 29, 2008 Members Report Posted November 29, 2008 The Fiebings dye is spirit dye and the antique paste is water based, so they are not compatable. Unless I am mistaken, you shouldn't dye over paste with any color. Always dye then antique. The only thing you can do now is to start over with the process. Quote
Members kseidel Posted November 29, 2008 Members Report Posted November 29, 2008 The antique paste, if Fiebiengs, is not water based. It has a mineral spirits base. This will cut thru the tan kote some. You should always dye any colors before any topcoat. You can salvage it. Use acetone to strip off the finish over the letters. Dye the letters and then re-finish. use another coat of tan kote for your final finish and work into the leather. It will remove any loose antique and leave a deeper topcoat finish. Be sure to let the tan kote dry an hour or two before applying another finish or using. Keith Quote
