Skived Leather + Straight Stitch?

Recommended Posts

How do i punch straight holes in skived leathers. (see my attached sketch)

If i punch one part and then glue them together i can open the hole with an awl, but i'm not satisfied with the result when making the holes with my awl. (Nothing wrong with the awl, a new sharpened diamond awl from Craft Sha.) I want to use a stitching chisel, but wonder how, or if it's possible in this situation?

Make the holes first and then skive the edges. Then they'll be straight through.

Then i need to make perfectly aligned stitching holes on both pieces, and align them perfect when i glue them together.

No...

Also, if you're going to glue all your layers together first and try it that way, yes, it will be hard to get them "perfect"...so get them as close as possible and then use either a VERY sharp knife to trim them all to be exactly flush or use a belt sander to do so..........IF you're going to do it that way (glue all layers together and then stitch)....

Im planning a bi-fold wallet. (http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=65688&hl=)

But i have changed it a little. Backside 4oz, front and credit card pocked 2oz.

I think were all saying the same thing here, but in different words, let me try ! Angles are hard to drill straight yes ! So Glue all necessary pieces together beforehand, Now Drill all together while flat, Now Skive, Now Sew into already aligned holes.

Hope this is understandable and will help you . ----- Wild Bill46

DR80.....sending you a PM re: "drilling" holes...

Also, just watch Nigel's video I gave the link to above about multiple layers. That is the best way to do it.
