Members Jj5685 Posted November 17, 2015 Members Report Posted November 17, 2015 I had an idea but not sure if it would work. Has anybody tried this? I figure it would come out as a dark mahogany depending on how many miles you've driven. Quote
Members cgleathercraft Posted November 17, 2015 Members Report Posted November 17, 2015 Well my car will be due for an oil change when it gets back from the body shop (deer + 40mph = crunch). I run full synthetic, not sure if that will matter but I can dip a piece of scrap and see what it looks like the next day. I imagine it will waterproof it quite well but wouldn't make stuff with it to sell. Motor oil is considered a hazardous product and can cause chemical burns (been there, done that, wasn't fun, itched for a week). Quote
Members Jj5685 Posted November 17, 2015 Author Members Report Posted November 17, 2015 Oh really didn't know it could cause chemical burns. I just did an oil change yesterday and thought about that. When I change the primary oil on my Harley it's kind of a bluish grey color ha ha that may be cool. I would think once it dries it should be safe I've got oil stains on some of my jeans and their fine. If you try post some pictures I may do it later today. Quote
Members cgleathercraft Posted November 17, 2015 Members Report Posted November 17, 2015 Yeah the oil was warm and splashed me enough to soak the entire front of my shirt. A hot day in the summer so even wearing it to finish out that vehicle was enough to cause a rash. Probably not super dangerous but could cause discomfort over time. Potentially making someone or their pet sick. I'd only do it to a utility piece and if i was in a pinch. But, who can resist a good experiment? lol Quote
Contributing Member TwinOaks Posted November 18, 2015 Contributing Member Report Posted November 18, 2015 Motor oil is NOT for leather....unless you built a leather engine. The leather will certainly soak it up, but it will wick through the leather until a uniform distribution of the oil is achieved...unfortunately, it'll also uniformly leech OUT of the leather. Good luck with the experiment. Quote
