Members TinkerTailor Posted December 18, 2015 Members Report Posted December 18, 2015 I will have to check the prices for some of the acrylic. I have been using file folders (oak tag) or poster board. I get the posterboard at the dollar store and its 2 sheets that are about 36"x24" each for a buck. It feels about the same thickness and rigidity as the oak tag. I get white and its nice for some larger patterns so it doesnt have seams. But You do have to trace the pattern then cut it out. Would be cool to eliminate a step on some of the more common things and have say 1/16" acrylic that you could hold down and then run your razor around without doing the tracing first. Alex To be honest i find it easier to get a nice cut by scribing and then removing the pattern. It is too easy to run into problems with moving patterns, and wandering knives. On straight edges, i don't draw the lines, i just use my awl to poke a divot at each corner, and then connect the dots cutting against a known straight, non slip steel ruler. Curves i scribe the whole way and then freehand cut Soft chrome tans and stretchy deer, i cut them with the pattern in place. I often also place the ruler on top of the card to stiffen the cut line. Also, if you spray the back of the pattern with 3m super77, just a light dusting it will give it a little tack, wait a couple mins before applying to project. Play around. Spray glue is surprisingly useful for this. You want to check the glue and wait long enough so the tack gets strong then starts to drop off. It does not take long if you only dusted it. This means the glue is closer to cure, and it unlikely to transfer to the leather. If it does, wait till its dry and lightly rub it off. Test before using on suede or milled leathers. Members Seaboard Posted January 6, 2016 Members Report Posted January 6, 2016 Hi all, I may be new to leatherwork but cutting plastics and materials is somewhat of a specialty for me. I currently have two CNC routers (4'x8' and 5'x10') that I use for sign production, templates, stencils and any other form of sheet good cutting. Unless you have very small holes, crevasses, etc. smaller than 1/16" then it can be cut on the router. Cast plexiglass can be edge flame polished if you need that smooth an edge but most don't it just happens to be a by product of the laser cutting. If anyone would like templates cut, please feel free to send me a message through here or my website with the design and I can see what I can do. Most of the times I have drops from sign jobs that I can cut the template out of and would be willing to work out a deal ( trades, barter, cash, etc.). I also have the software for converting JPEG, Bitmap, TIFF files into vectors files for cutting. If you don't have access to a computer my suggestion would be to take your hand drawn template to one of the big box office supply stores and have them run it through the scanner (which most of them can do up to 36" wide scans) and have it saved on a flash drive to be emailed by a friend or at the library. From that I can convert that into the vector image necessary for cutting. I also can do 3D cutting if you want to do wet forming molds or plastic logo stamps and such. I have started to learn so much from this site already and want to give back for everyone's generosity and kindness. Chris www.seaboardsolutionsgroup.com Quote

Chris www.seaboardsolutionsgroup.com Greatly appreciated offer, and I am a huge fan of barter and trade, it keeps the cash in the hands of the makers. For me however shipping of anything from flawrida to canuckistan is stupid, and gives money to the wrong people.... Quote "If nobody shares what they know, we will eventually all know nothing." Members retiredff Posted January 25, 2016 Members Report Posted January 25, 2016 I've purchased several templates from Black River, and have been unhappy with the results. I bought a biker wallet, and a med-large holster templates. Not a fan. Just my .02 I have several of their templates and they work fine. What problems did you encounter? Quote
