Union Special 6600

Recommended Posts

post-56747-0-81096000-1452061625_thumb.jI just recently purchased a Union Special 6600 from 1913 and I am unable to find any information on the web about the machine. It has a similar needle to my Singer 29, and also has a pot that the threads run through which I would imagine was for holding wax. The machine came with everything from the 2 speed pulley and Westinghouse electric motor to the 1" wide leather belt, and everything in between. Its going to be a bit of a nightmare trying to figure how the motor mounts in relation to the pulley, then how all that transfers up to the machine. It appears it makes some type of chain stitch, but its nothing like Ive ever seen before. Any information on the machine would be greatly appreciated.

It is indeed a chainstitch machine, and there are several sub-classes. There are about 3 different needle classes, depending on sub-class. According to my reference material for needles, they are all commonly used chainstitch needles. Setting a chainstitch machine to sew correctly is completely different than a lockstitch. I can give you the general principles of how the stitch is formed, and very general setting instructions. There are also terms used for chainstitch machines that will be unfamiliar to lockstitch users. The machine will have limited uses for general leather work, but would be nice for a display machine.

Regards, Eric

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about how useful the machine could be when all the stitching could unravel if the thread becomes cut. It appears I will be using this machinate sew my vintage denim instead. Thanks again for the reply.
