Roller Foot Help With Padded Straps Please

Recommended Posts

I have been using a walking foot for a couple of years now but got a Techsew Roller Foot to get closer to the edge on watch straps and that has been going well with flat straps.

I have run into a problem with stitch length with the padded area of watch straps with stitch length.

This is with 69 top thread and 46 bobbin.

16 needle and the tension is fine.

but when it is on the padded part the stitch length is much shorter than the flat parts even though I do not change any of the settings.

here are some pictures

any help on what adjustment either in sewing or padding would be appreciated with the leather sewing gurus!

thank you

Greg

Looks like something is catching up somewhere on the rollers and preventing it from feeding correctly. Or you are holding it back absentmindedy while trying to position stitch, Or roller pressure is not high enough. Or the wheel is driving up the padding. Something like that.

I would get out some scrap, and make some long padded sections and see how close to the padding your machine can sew. Sew the first side, and then on the way back, gradually reduce the distance between the lines to see if there is a minimum width you need for the leather and padding combo you use. Watch for the raised padding hitting the roller or something.

the roller foot is definitely hitting the padded part and then goes to the flat part and does well....so I think I have set the padding so that the roller only rides on the flat part of the strap so it is consistent..does that make sense?

thank you

by the way ...it does a great job as long as everything is flat!

What make and model is the roller foot machine? If it is a flat bed straight stitch machine, what feed dog and throat plate set is installed? They usually come in three levels: fine, medium and course teeth. If you have fine teeth now you might do better with the medium or course set (with matching throat plate). With more tooth driving the bottom, you will get more consistent top stitches with the roller foot.

BTW: What diameter roller do you have?

it is a new Techsew 5580RF that they just came out with. The teeth look like fine or medium..the feed dogs are what it came with

it is a about and inch or so diamter roller foot

here it is on youtube when I just got it

It is a standard looking straight stitch build. Call Ronny and ask him to send you the heavier feed dog and throat plate set. A couple of spare feed dog and throat plate screws is also a good idea. These tend to fall on the floor when you change feed dogs and are mysteriously squirted of of the Universe, never to be seen again.

You may be able to get a larger roller wheel, but it will require raising the presser bar to get a proper fit. I think that more aggressive feeders will do the trick. Then you can play with the foot pressure to even out the stitch lengths.

Did you know that thread tension can affect the stitch length? This is especially so when you change thickness. A looser top and bottom tension combination is easier to transport than a heavier combo that fights the feeding action. Just don't loosen it to the point of slack in the top or bottom stitches.
