Need Help With Glue Penetrating Leather

hello,

first time leatherworker here. I tried glueing leather to a panel of plywood using contact cement and it seems that the glue is penetrating through the leather in blotches. How can i fix this and how can i prevent this from happening in the future?

What type and thickness of leather are you using? How did you apply the glue?

Perhaps you might be better served with a spray adhesive like 3m Spray 77. Used to only be able to get it at art supply but I just saw it at my local big box hardware place. Either lowes or home depot .. sorry I can remember which.

I use weldwood contact cement almost daily and I have never had the glue come through so I am really interested in what your using for my own future reference.

Actually I woke up this morning and it's not coming through anymore. Im guessing the contact cement was slightly wet in some areas and ended up wetting the leather. I guess giving some time to dry up properly solved the problem. Thanks for the reply though!

as for your question, Im not too sure of the thickness but if i had to guess I would say 1/16" inch thick.

Very thin leather can easily be penetrated by the solvents in glues. Spray glue will stop this issue. GM 77 works, goes on smooth, 90 is much stronger but goes on a little stringy.

Plus with spray glue you can just lay pieces of cardstock down as a mask where you dont want glue. Paper tends to blow up from the pressure. Makes doing turned edges so much easier. I also spray through cut out masks to attach buckle billets to bags for stitching.
