medium duty leather machine

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a cylinder arm machine that can handle canvas and 4-9oz leather for bags, wallets, and the like. I've been looking into the CB227R, Juki LS341 and Seiko CW8B. In my research I've come across a LS341 clone called a TypicaI. Has anyone heard about this machine?

Any other opinions for the machines under consideration? the Juki, Seiko, and Typical would be from a local reputable vendor, I'd have to get the CB227 shipped.

Buying from a local, reputable dealer is a BIG plus right there, shipping always comes with risk and cost. Typical is a clone manufacturer who enjoys a good reputation and has a significant presence and distribution network in Europe. 

The Juki LS-341 gets my vote on your list. Aside from the improved quality and resale value of an original, you also enable Juki to advance the state of the art. Otherwise the clone manufacturers won't have anything new to copy ten years from now.

Thanks Uwe. I should have mentioned that the Juki and Sieko would be used models, I can't afford brand new. The Typical would be a new machine.
 In case that information impacts the conversation.

A nice, used original will cost about as much as a new clone. Five years from now that nice original will likely be worth just a little bit less if you take care of it; the new clones will drop in value considerably more over that same time period because, well, they're just used clones by then. A used clone is worth perhaps half as much as a used original, at least my book. If the used machines are in good condition and have been properly serviced by the dealer, I'd still vote for the Juki.

thanks again Uwe. I have a Juki DDL 555 that is a work horse and great machine, so I'm inclined to agree with you. The used Juki is $1900, about $350 more than the new clone. I haven't done any comparison shopping yet to know if these prices are middle of the road or not.

Cowboy and others advertising on this page offer equivalents to the 227 and CW8.

Why not talk to them first?

I sell a lot of second hand machines but tend to shy away from more modern styles as with a lot of work they tend to wear critical components and can be more difficult than a new machine. A good new Chinese machine with servo motor is usually not a lot more expensive than some of the clapped out machines seen on eBay

The dealer is going to set up the machines I mentioned so I can try them out and see which machine is a good fit, great service. I've seen that Cowboy has an attachable table making the cylinder arm easier for flat goods. Does Juki have that option or can I make one for it?

Any dealer who's going to that length to accommodate your decision making process is worth serious consideration. I'm not aware of Juki making a table attachment for the LS-341. You can always build your own. I make table attachments for Pfaff 335, Durkopp Adler 69 and Durkopp Adler 205. Juki TSC-441 and Juki LS-341 are next on my to-do list for table attachments.
