Recreating a two-tone leather watch strap

Recommended Posts

Hi! Was looking for some advice...

I've seen several two-tone watch straps online, and I'd like to try my hand at one.

Because the coloring will only be on the grain side, do you think I should use painter's tape to mask off the strap before applying dye with a dauber, or using painter's tape with something like Angelus Leather Paint and a brush?

Look forward to hearing your suggestions. Thanks!

Just taking a close look at the top image and at the line between the two colors that person certainly used painters tape and the yellow appears to be paint. Its pretty tough getting yellow dye that yellowy. Closest I ever got was on the bag below. I had put several coats of Fiebings yellow dye but it wasnt very solid looking and was more a tint.

I then went and bought the Tandy Water based stain and I was happy with the color and its opacity. Still didnt feel paint like when you see it in person but it was more substantial than the Fiebings. I prefer the happy medium of solidish color but still getting some penetration as I dont usually go for the solid feel of acrylic on leather but each task has its best practices and I have certainly used a bunch of acrylic on leather. I dont know if the tandy water stain would seep under the tape though. Hmmmm going to have to go out to the shed and try.
