29K71 drive belt slipping

Any advice on splicing the drive belt on the 29K71. I have tried one but it still slips. I thought I should get some advice before I mess it up completely.

Hi Jim,

If what you have is a solid, round leather drive belt, I think that they are often just spliced with a hog ring or you can do the same with a short piece of 1/16" wire. If the belt is old and dry, you can make it a lot grippier by oiling it and wiping off the excess.

Try spraying some Belt No-Slip on the leather belt and the iron pulleys. You can buy it in auto parts stores. No-Slip is used on fan and air conditioner v-belts to stop squealing from slippage.

Thanks GPAULDER AND WIZCRAFTS.. I never even considered a belt dressing but that will be my first try just to make things easy:  from there I will use some of my wife wire she uses to make floral arrangements, that is plenty light. Depends a bit on the belt diameter a bit 8mm / 5/16" belts works best for patcher machines I´d  say and maybe you can shorten it a bit if it appears to be to loose. I tried no slip spray and it became messy over the time but maybe no slip spray is different over here or depends on the brand. Be careful with oil on leather drive belts. If you take too much oil... well - it´s oil, what else can I say.

Colophony is a good thing and I heard bee wax works well too but have not tried it by my self.

Leather belts can stretch a bit over time. It needs to be pretty tight.

A 29 should turn over very easily and if it is tight then there may be an issue with the machine.

Darren thanks for your reply. My machine turns jyst fine it's the belt that is the headache. Only have one so I thought it would be wise to ask those in the know before I ruin mine. Thanks, Jim King, Elmira, NY

You can get away with ( IME it actually works better than the leather belts on treadle machines ) using the small diameter flexible plastic tube that is sold to get air into fish tanks..or is used in oxygen breathing machines or a "clear fuel line"..you don't need the type with the internal braiding, join it with a staple and melt the ends together with a lighter flame lightly applied...and it is cheap and really easy to find..

Another thing to use on leather belts is rosin. I have a can of powdered rosin, it can be rubbed onto the belt to help it grip. Music supply stores sell rosin for violins too.
