safeasfcuk Report post Posted August 31, 2016 Hey guys I'm relatively new to leatherwork and pattern making. However I'm trying to create a personal gift for a relative. The item is a iPad sleeve that allows them to carry both their iPad and their Bellini keyboard cover. I have designed the case by measuring the width / length and thickness of both iPad and keyboard and them drawn a shap that is equal to this plus the half of the thickness on each side. I have factored in about 3mm for a sewing edge also. i have cut his in paper but nervous it's not going to work on learher. My question is have I measured this correctly? fivewayswelshcobs Report post Posted August 31, 2016 Good start but now consider the leather you want to use. A thicker leather will need to be cut larger than a thinner leather (think smaller hole on inside of pouch as taken up by leather thickness) . The suppleness of the leather as some leather will not bend as easily as others so it will need to be cut larger. The leather finish will also affect fit as suede will grip the item more than a smooth finish. Also consider the end user as one person can cope with a snug fit early on but another can't so is less likely to use the pouch, l did a Kobe sleeve for my Mum it was a quick job but I found it easy to put on/off but as she isn't as strong she struggled and rarely used the sleeve so had a to make another one. safeasfcuk Report post Posted August 31, 2016 (edited) Thanks I guess it's trial and error untill you get the perfect fit, may end up with a few sleeves while experimenting. so the formulare would be stitch bleed + leather thickness + 1/2 item thickness (each side) + item with/length = cut size is this correct?
