wildrose Report post Posted June 16, 2006 For the first time this year, I'll be selling at Burnside Plantation's Blueberry Festival in Bethlehem, PA. It's a colonial era event, so I've been trying to focus on more than just Celtic art (my usual). Here is my latest, a jewelry box. As you can see, it's gotten the cat inspection already! SmilinJim Report post Posted June 26, 2006 Hi wildrose A question or two. I want to do some jewelry boxes but I want to cover the entire box. The boxes I have in mind have a curved top, more like a chest. I know I can glue the leather to the wood but how about finishing the edges, other than lace. I want to do 4 boxes, one for my wife and one for each of her three sisters. The theme will be the seasons, spring summer fall and winter, for their ages. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Like your art. Post some more. Jim
wildrose Report post Posted June 26, 2006 Maybe do the edges with tabs, and skive the leather down, glue the tabs under. I seem to recall seeing a piece by Peter Main with this type of assembly. I don't know if I'm explaining that really well...but I wouldn't stitch it either if it could be avoided.
vacano Report post Posted December 3, 2007 have you just been using a glue to attach the leather to the box lid? if so..what type of glue are you using?
wildrose Report post Posted December 4, 2007 I use either white "crafters" glue or contact cement - depending on the size of the project. Let's say, for example, the box is about 4x4", I'd use the white glue: I have a large buffing mit, like you'd buy to wax a car, and I put that on top of the newly glued box, then I put my 12x12" tooling marble over that, and let it set for several hours. But if the project won't fit under the mitt, I'll use contact cement. That's just what works for me.
