Learning to do wood grain

So I've spent today practicing wood grain style dyeing.  Working with an airbrush as well as splatter and sponge techniques.  This was the first piece of leather I tried it on and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Any feedback or advice is most appreciated.

I like it. It looks quite real. I might go over it with a really light thinned wash to cover the little bit of natural leather showing here and there. What scale is that, Like is that a piece of leather 2" by 6" or is it 2 feet by 6 feet? Cause if it is 2' by 6' the grain is too big....and you don't understand what scrap is supposed to be.....

Haha, it's 3"x10".  I wanted to try something 3" wide because that's how wide the guitar strap I'm practicing for is.

There's so many jokes I could make about my wood. . .

 

But honestly youre right.  It's the same thing I was thinking, I need to bust out a few knots in a darker brown colour to really make it work.

Lol.  Well I'll try some more with some more knots hopefully today, some darker brown areas too.

Using Tandy pro waterstain:  Spray evenly with light brown, use toothbrush to splatter medium brown and immediately wipe with wet sponge in downward direction. Put medium brown on sponge, wipe downward to add larger grain sections. Air brush knots in medium brown (in future use dark brown fit knots and dagger strokes). Resoline

Same here. Thought it's a piece of mahogany. One barely finds a knot or cracks in them. Great job.

Here's my second try.  I used some dark brown to add some knots and highlights.  Still working on my airbrushing skills.
