proper finishes

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm still kind of new and trying to learn.  Is there any book out there that someone would recommend that explains what type of finishes to use on different projects.  I have pretty much been using eco flo super sheen on everything which is probably wrong..  I use fiebings dyes.  There is so many different finishes, atom wax , ausie, super sheen, some use neatsfoot oil , olive oil , leather conditioner, beeswax, etc.  I'm sure it varies for different projects but I don't know which for what or in what order to use them.   I'm pretty sure I'm not using the best stuff out there.  Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

I have been doing this for quite a few years and I'm not sure if I can tell you which is the best or not the best. The best thing I have found to do is through trial and error buy some small quantities of leather finish and conditioner and see what you like best for your project.

I personally have found that Montana pitch blend is a very good product both the oil and the paste on the other hand I also use some pure neat's-foot oil occasionally.

As for a final top coat I either use Renaissance wax or a product similar to mop & Glo floor polish which is an acrylic wax diluted 50-50 with water.

I hope this helps you some but as I said before most of it is trial and error, use whatever you like for the look that you like. Good luck.

It looks like you are going through what we all do. I'm still trying to figure It out myself.

I try to keep it simple.

Vegtan gets Aussie.

If I want it shiney, resolene or super sheen.

If it's chrome tanned and predyed, I don't do anything to the finish.

I don't know if this is proper, but it's what I have been doing.

The new batch of bracelets I'm working on all got a coating of hide rejuventator after dying. It was a messy process. I also forgot to rub off my excess dye before adding the rejuvenator. So, that's been fun to deal with. Hahaha.

Ian Atkinson from Leodis Leather made a video in 2011 comparing 8 popular finishes. Vid Link here.

Color, Waterproofing and the scent each finish left on the leather were covered in detail, among other things. The finishes were:

  • Neatsfoot
  • Fiebing's Carnauba
  • Gum Tragacanth
  • Nikwax
  • Kiwi Aquastop Aerosol
  • Fiebing's Acrylic Leather Sheen
  • Fiebing's Tan Kote
  • Fiebing's Acrylic Resolene

His informative, and very helpful videos tend to be long-form; you can benefit from this particular offering by jumping around. You can also skip to Overall comparison at 37:00.
