Vintage English skiver/splitter

Recommended Posts

Hi - Another tyro newbie seeking advice. I have acquired the splitter shown attached. While it is clear how to split. I wondered if there is a tecnique to taper skive my strap ends. If you use a similar vintage machine I would be grateful for any advice on practical usage.

Actually that machine is intended for beveling outer soles for boots. It leaves a rough mark on the good side of the leather. You can run the ends of the leather through it but you only get a short slope with rough ( tracks) and for a clean cut all the way through you have to run a piece of scrap right behind to push the first piece through.
