Stud removal and repair

Recommended Posts

I've done a search, but couldnt come up with anything. I'm a newb to leather working and have made a few small items, but what I need some advice with is, is how to repair the the leather after removing metal studs. I purchased my motorcycle with these bags and tank bib already installed but can't stand the look of the studs in the leather. Reminds me of the leather clad dude singing YMCA.. (no offense intended if you're into that sort of thing, just not the look I'm going for with the bike.)

Here's  a link to a few pics of what I'm referring to. I know how to remove them, and have removed a few that are hidden by the closure (which left the indention from being installed for 20 years) but how can I repair the leather so that you don't see the holes and/or impressions?

While I wouldn't mind doing that, my skill level won't support it.

I was thinking of taking them and soaking them in warm water to soften the leather but I'm not sure it wont ruin them

Skill level will go way up by time your done. Will it be perfect? No.Will it be one of a kind that YOU did? Yes. When your level goes up again you can remake it again.Soaking leather never a good idea. While wet it will be soft. Once it dries it will be stiff and hard. Only way to get skill is to do. I make stuff just to learn. Wife kids and I have SO much stuff made with leather.lol. You can also check the motorcycle gear sub forum for more specialized question on bike gear. Also I just noticed the bags I thought was just the tank bible. Bags more leather but still a pattern with built in instructions. You might find your niche. Good luck wish had specific information to help.

That can not be fixed. You will need to make new. The only thing you will ever fail in life is, that witch you don't try.
