mojave Report post Posted February 11, 2017 I want to start making my own projects and was wondering what weight leathers do you keep on hand? I don't have a lot of storage space. I want to make holsters, belts and wallets. I was thinking on getting 3/4oz, 6/7oz, 8/9 oz., and so lining leather. My reasoning is that, I could double layer if I needed thicker leather or lining holsters. I have been using kits to get a understanding of different construction. Also, I don't plan on doing much tooling, as I am not very good at it. I have good stamps, just bad operator. What do you think about getting a splitter? Any info would be great. Thanks, Howard
Halitech Report post Posted February 11, 2017 for belts and holsters, the 8/9 is all you need. For wallets, you will want 4/5 for the backs and 2oz for the inside or you'll be sitting on a really thick item. I bought the cheap one from tandy and it works great for items under 3" wide
OLDNSLOW Report post Posted February 11, 2017 What you have pointed out will work for all things that you are thinking of, you can always glue 2 pieces of 8oz if you want to make a heavy duty gun belt, and for that you would need a skiver or the small skiver splitter that tandy sells. I use one of those on heavy weight gun belts on the ends so that they will go through the buckle and keeper with out any problems.
