andrewa Report post Posted March 18, 2017 I'm wanting to make something like this.. but I note that it has an unusual style of "piping" down the middle of the flap. Has as anyone any idea how to do this? thx in advance Andrew A
CaptQuirk Report post Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) I'm thinking it is as simple as two pieces joined by the piping. Piping is a piece of chord, wrapped in material that leaves "wings", for lack of a better term, that you attach the other pieces to. Does that make sense? Looking at it again, the flap isn't two pieces, but it looks like it was cut out in the center to allow for the piping. andrewa Report post Posted March 19, 2017 Yes, it could be. Thx. Will experiment a bit. It just had that glazed amorphous look to it, which made me think of a properly finished leather edge, but I think I've "overthought it"! A
MY63 Report post Posted March 19, 2017 I am not an expert but it looks like the front flap has been wet moulded over a cord or thong. During the forming the leather has become burnished by the tools used to mould it that is why it looks like a burnished edge. The stitching is not just to draw attention to the piping but will also secure the backing that holds the cord in place.
KittenThrasher Report post Posted March 21, 2017 Looks to me like you can see the texture of the cord through the leather covering it, 'must be very thin I'm thinking, that might be worth considering if you're going to experiment with it. As MY63 said, it may be wet moulded round the cord - that would certainly give the nice texture shown.
andrewa Report post Posted March 21, 2017 Hmmm, yes, I agree It looks to me like some leather piping in slightly different colour, covered with gum "whatever", and burnished, and sewn in. I'll give it a go - the original bag is something like 15x13cm, but I want to make a bigger version of about 25 X 30 cm. A
