Contributing Member wolvenstien Posted June 29, 2007 Contributing Member Report Posted June 29, 2007 (edited) Ok, Background story: June 1st 2006 a friend died in a motorcycle wreck, and his family came down from up north in Novenber to help with setting up a poker run to fund a scholarship that we set up in Bens name at the local collage where he was a student. His family all ride as well, and while Bens brother was here helping set up the poker run, he got to talking to me about the leather work I had done and asked me if I could make a vest for him and the rest of his family with a copy of a tattoo everyone got as a memorial on the back of the vest.... I thought about it, and told him yes.... dumb move on my part... I am not a dress maker and had never done anything like it... Anyway.... I started by doing the memorial on a scrap piece and sent them pictures of it to see if they liked it. They did. I was stuck in trying to resize the Tandy vest pattern to fit this big guy... had no idea, and everything I tried did not work, I had asked several people to guide me and nothing happened in the progress... even got a lady not too far from me to agree to cut the leather and put it all together and put in a lining and everything for me as long as I supplied all materials for only $50.... but being out of work for the past year I could not cover the $50. I finally got a chance... the poker run was upon us and the family was in town to ride in it. I taped several pieces of poster board together and got the brothers vest and laid it out and traced it to give me the exact size he is wearing.... sweet! I did a new carving on 3/4 oz veg tan and used the pattern I traced to cut the chrome tanned cow hide for the vest back... I have come to a stop as I tried to do one of the front sides but the chrome tan is too thick to run through my sewing machine with too many layers... and the front has pockets and what not and it is not coming together too well so i am going to have to re-think the whole front.... actually I am thinking the front piece be a singe piece with pockets sewn onto it.... instead of the three pieces sewn together to form a front side... Anyways... First pic is of the original drawing of the memorial, the second pic is the first memorial on scrap, the third pic is the second on 3/4 oz, and then the back as it is now.... And here is a pic of the back as it sits....
