Members amwildman Posted October 19, 2018 Members Report Posted October 19, 2018 Hello. I am completely new to leatherworking and I want to make some shoes. I could use a bit of guidance regarding tools and such. Can anybody estimate the size/type of thread/needles/awl for the more decorative stitching in this next video, even a rough guess? https://youtu.be/iHwE9C_3MUo?t=45 Starts at 45 seconds. Another video with similar tools here, at 7:31. https://youtu.be/IG02Iwl2kt4?t=451 The awls seem especially difficult to find. Any advice welcome. Thanks! -Aaron Quote
Members Stetson912 Posted October 19, 2018 Members Report Posted October 19, 2018 Lisa Sorrell is a well known bootmaker in Oklahoma. She has a website that sells a plethora of awesome shoe related stuffs. Under the tool section you may find what you need. The awl is simply a curved awl blade and handle. I think she has them too. https://sorrellnotionsandfindings.com/product-category/tools/ There may be other places to find what you need too, but this source is all I'm familiar with Quote
Members Stetson912 Posted October 19, 2018 Members Report Posted October 19, 2018 Correction, they are called inseaming awls. Lisa offers 4 sizes and hafts for mounting. For finer stitching I would assume the 2 5/8" awl would be best. However, she would most certainly know which one would be best for you Quote
