Holster help needed

Recommended Posts

I am hoping someone here may be able to help me out. A friend of mine wants me to make him a leg holster for his girlfriend’s Henry Mare’s Leg. Normally holsters aren’t a problem because I would have the item to reference but he is 4 states away so having it here is not possible.

I have searched extensively online online for measurements to no avail.

Has anyone made one that would be willing to share measurements or a pattern?

I’m not familiar with any of the local gun shops enough to ask if I could take measurements from one with out feeling obligated to buy a new gun. That wouldn’t fly with the wife.

Any my help is appreciated

thanks

I don't have any help to give but I would think that if you went to the local gun shop and asked, they'd have no problem letting you and I'd also use it as an opportunity to get your name and face out there so they know where they can get and/or send folks to for all their leathery needs. That may be a good thing to try as I see it. Also, as a consumer of all sorts of things, I have zero guilt NOT buying stuff from a vendor. I vote with my wallet and I try to avoid larger purchases without a lot of thought.

Asking won't hurt.

Battlemunky obviously does NOT live in the Peoples Democratic Republic of California, but I salute his approach. An alternate approach would be to work with a full-sized Henry and cut it down to specified length.  That should cut out a lot of guesswork.  Good luck.

I do NOT. Here in Alabama, they give us guns when we enter the state, vote, and buy groceries.

Wow, so that sucks not even really being able to shop for or handle a firearm without intent to purchase. I heard it was restrictive out west but I didn't know it was that bad. Y'all must not have any gun related crime out there, huh? \sarc

... and you have to have a background check to buy ammunition!  Know why?  (Well, other than that the state is run by people who don't have a clue...) purpose number one is to identify and eliminate what are known here as "phantom firearms".  Those are guns that a person might have that somehow slipped through the draconian regulations about registering them.  You know, like that .22 cal rifle that your grandad had when he was five and he gave it to you when he was about to die.  Not only that, but you have to have a permit to buy a handgun, for which you have to have a California address to apply for, but (how smart is this?) after you have waited 10 days to pick up your firearm, you have to show "Proof of residence" but neither your drivers license nor your firearm purchasing permit qualify as "proof of residence". You have to use a utility bill or vehicle registration.  Or (now get this) you can use your driving record. To get that you go to DMV and pay $5 and they will ask you what address you want to use, then type that in so you can go to the gun shop and "prove" where you live.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, don't take the advice to cut down a full size Henry rifle. If you do that you are making a short barreled rifle. Doing so without the proper federal permit is a FELONY. You sure don't want that kind of headache.

SaddleBags is talking about cutting down the holster pattern.  It's a pattern or measurements the OP wants, not cutting down a rifle to fit a pattern!

I guess I never considered that someone would think that I meant to cut down a firearm .  That make absolutely no sense.  Guess I'll have to be more specific or as we used to say, "make it idiot proof".

All that trouble?  I would not have an issue suggesting he buy one from one of the online makers that makes that holster.  Had a buddy bring one over.  He showed me the one he found online and liked.  I looked at the price and told him to buy it.  Because I could not afford to track down the hardware, order it, pattern it, and make it for what that guy was selling it for.  I don't mind doing special order or one off stuff when I can.  But I'm not looking to break even or loose money on my time either.  Sometimes you just have to move them along to someone that does what they want.

why not have the customer make a tracing and the the measurements on poster board. you could then make a quick 3d pattern with some wood and dowel rods. wet forming will not be an option since you don't have an exact model on you. but that should get you close enough to make a great holster.
