whinewine Report post Posted September 21, 2007 I am in process of buying a new camera (Nikon D40 digital), and, in talking with a store's owner, the topic came up of making a brown (natural??) seat pad for his cycle to match his brown (natural??) tooled seat (which was done in Mexico). The pad he has is black. I don't know what brand he owns & I haven't seen the cycle or the pad. He said it attaches with suction cups (huh?) The reason I'm bringing it up beforehand is that this job would be partial payment for this camera, so I need to know some sort of ballpark $$ figure to quote him when I actually do see the cycle and pad and actually do negotiate the purchase of the camera. I don't want to walk into this as blind as I am now. Does anyone out there have a clue about motorcycle seat pads? Any pictures (preferably)? What would be a fair price to charge for: untooled? stamped? carved? Thank you for all your input in this matter. I don't want to seem like (more of) an idiot when negotiating for a camera. I don't want to rip him off. I don't want to be ripped off myself.
Guest Report post Posted September 21, 2007 Whinewine The pad or passenger pad is a very cheaply made item the "pan" is plastic about 4" x 6" Maybe a little larger but still very small and slightly curved to fit the rear fender..... it has suction cups on the bottom to hold it to the rear fender..... It sounds scary to say the least....but, they work! The only thing you can do is bill for time and material.....so give yourself an acceptable hourly rate....and add your material costs.....assume you will have to replace the padding. That way it will be a bonus if you don't have to remove it. Dave Theobald
Roger Report post Posted September 22, 2007 really depends on the size of the pad. i have done some that are 4" x 6" and up to 9" x 14". the larger one is basically the same size as a small solo seat. i myself don't charge extra for tooling so if they want it plain, they are loosing out. i hate plain seats but, that just me i know i don't charge near enough and generally i charge less for a p-pad because it is being done with the seat but, i have done them for as little as $50 and up to $225 here are three that i have done. all different sizes. BTW i do find them more difficult to cover than a seat. i guess there is just less room for error
whinewine Report post Posted September 23, 2007 Gentlemen: thank you! Now I have a clue. I value your opinions & expertise greatly & I thank you again for your input! I still will have many questions, and as I go along I will ask, since this will be the first project of this type for me. Russ
