GMorris Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Ebay has a leather splitter/skiver for $169.00 buy it now. from Neelsaddlery. Has anyone bought one of these? If so what can you tell me about it? Thanks Gary Quote
Elton Joorisity Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 I have the one that they copied it from (Heritage Splitter from Weavers) Honestly you need three hands to split anything. Don't get me wrong it is sharp and a decent splitter for the money. The thing that makes it a three handed splitter is the fact that you have to hold the handle forward with one hand while you are using it and that causes you to only be able to split a little then shorten up with your pulling hand then split some more... TracyMoss Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 The skiver is better for lap skiving. Just strap ends, not constant level splitting. Quote

TracyMoss Posted February 6, 2008 Report Posted February 6, 2008 Depends on what size and how much. If you find yourself needing to split a lot of leather that is under six inches wide, you should probably invest in a hand crank splitter of some sort. The used ones run about $100.00 dollars an inch. Not cheap, but worth it. However if you just do the occational splitting they do make some splitter/skivers like the one you saw except they are can be locked to a certain position and straps canbe pulled through by hand. If you are mainly leveling straps bench mounted lap skiver/splitters work well, but any thing over 3 inches it's not as user friendly. Anyhow, if you can find a used one that just needs the blade worked on, as these can be the best bargain. Quote
