Lookling for help with a Chandler C-287 / Juki DNU-241

Recommended Posts

Hello and Happy Holidays.

I found this group a while back and knew I would have a couple of questions eventually. Now is that time.

I've had quite a few old industrial sewing machines and I produce a specialty item for cycling. I only occasionally use leather but work in a lot of heavy webbing and mesh materials. I recently sold my Tacsew T-111 (originally from Sailrite) as I bought a Chandler C-267. This machine Is a Chandler branded Nakajima 280-L, which became the Juki DNU-241hs when Juki purchased Nakajima (from my understanding). It is a triple feed machine and the current updated model is the Juki 1541. My primary machine is used 3-5 hours a day, 1-3 days a week. I also own a wonderful old Singer 78-1 needle feed (top feed only) and a Chinese boot patcher I've modified.

I bought this Chandler / Juki from the original owner and it did not have a lot of use. However the owner used 3-N-1 oil to lube it and as that has a wax component, eventually gummed up the machine. It was then stored for a long time and gathered considerable dust and lint. After a ton of cleaning, de-gumming and many adjustments (and a new Consew servo motor) I have it sewing very well. However I have  a couple of issues I cannot figure out. So I am hoping some of the 'Big Brains' here can assist me.

Problem 1 is about a .5-1mm gap between the outer presser foot and the feed dog plate. The inner foot does not have this issue. This lack of pressure allows my material to sometimes slip as it is not getting enough contact. My adjustments have the feet raising at the same height. I have checked the outer foot measurements to another outer foot to be sure it is not short, and is not. Changing the spring pressure makes no difference. I have thoroughly checked over the bar for the outer foot and cannot find an adjustment to allow up/down adjustment (like most machines) so I can drop it down. I have gone through the manual, parts list breakdown and even found an Engineer's Manual for a Juki DNU-241and still cannot find the adjustment.

Problem 2 is much more minor. This is an M-size bobbin machine. The issue is the bobbin case can be very difficult to clip in. I have made sure it is clean and with no obstructions. I would assume the bobbins may be a bit wide but they are the same ones I used in the T111.

So, what I am asking is there someone with experience on the Juki DNU-241 that could point out where the adjustment is for the height of the outer foot?

I included a photo of the presser foot bar and the collar (green arrow) where msot machiens would have a set screw to raise/lower the bar, but this one does not. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated and if I can ever lend assistance, I would be happy to.

Cheers, BJ

The height adjustments for the pressor foot is on the back side of the machine. Check pages 7, 8, 9 and 10 of the 241engineers manual. If the 241 is the same as the 1541 refer to section 7 of the Engineers Manual.

Hopes this helps.

Excellent, thanks. Over the next couple of days I will study these manuals and see if it matches up. Cheers, BJ
