Carving Animal Fur

this may ( or may not) seem a strange question but another gunrig ive been contemplating came with the carving design,one design has a deer and the other has a bulls head.

whats the best tool/technique for creating a fur like appearance?.

if you know of any links to web pages or vids that demonstrate this would bew appreciated.

Skippy, I've done a few tutorials on here on how I carve different animals, some of them with fur. I cant figure out where some of them are at on the forum anymore but you can get to them from this link to my website. There are a lot of different ways to create hair texture. The most basic way is to use the hair blade for a swivel knife that Tandy sells. Other ways include cutting individual hairs with a swivel knife, drawing them in with a sewing needle or an awl blade. For the most realistic hair on leather that I've seen, a special knife made up of several exacto knife blades in a handle is used. No matter what you use, pay attention to the direction that hair grows on an animal. When cutting in your hair, make sure you change direction as it grows on an animal. Hope this helps.
