Skiving Issues

Recommended Posts

I am new to serious leather working and recently bought a pull type skiver. After 2 hours of playing with it and adjusting it (a little filing) I got it to work beautifully. I can taper 8 oz down to nothing and make it flat and pretty.

The problem is that I picked up some 8 oz chrome tanned leather that is soft and I am having a hard time skiving it. I can get about half way through and then I can not get it to cut any longer. Is there a trick to skiving chrome tanned leather?

chrome tan simply wont skive pretty like veg tan will. I have had some success by putting duct tape on the back of the piece and then pulling it through or taking my round knife to it but if it is tanned too soft, it will still not do well.

Try a belt sander and angle the leather for the taper you want.
